This Kathak dancer painting is inspired by the Indian actress, the beautiful Rekha who played "Umrao Jaan" a courtesan of Lucknow in the movie of the same name. Umrao Jaan is a 1981 Bollywood film directed by Muzaffar Ali. Based on the 1905 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada, the film tells the story of a Lucknow courtesan and her rise to fame and fall. As a child who is kidnapped in the year 1840 and sold to a lady running a brothel, the little girl is trained to be a singer-dancer and she grows up to be an accomplished poetess and a renowned courtesan, Umrao Jaan. The dancing courtesan would woe the well-to-do in the city. And the story continues. It is a very touching story, of a woman who pines to lead a normal life. A movie to be watched. For the story and the portrayal of Umrao Jaan by actress Rekha
I dedicate this painting to Umrao Jaan and the score of women like her, lives wasted to work against their will.
